Glasgow City Mission is an interdenominational
Christian charity that works with homeless people and those
who are disadvantaged in the city. We also work with children
and families in the Govan area of the city.

David Nasmith
|
David Nasmith was born into a prosperous
family and had little knowledge of the poverty, abuse and
inequality that existed in his home city of Glasgow.
When he was training to be an apprentice in the manufacturing
industry, David came face to face with the conditions that
many citizens of Glasgow lived in. It was among the poor
that David found his calling, caring for them and sharing
the gospel. He had a vision for an interdenominational agency
that would work alongside churches to provide for the spiritual
and material welfare of those in need in Glasgow. In 1826,
David established Glasgow City Mission, the world’s
first City Mission.
David travelled around the UK and the world, establishing
City Missions wherever he went and writing to others to
encourage them to do the same. He challenged the church
to ‘go to the poor’ and have a very visible
presence in their local communities, sharing the practical
message of faith as well as the spiritual.

Today on every continent and in 38 countries, Christians
from a variety of denominations can be found working together
bringing practical and spiritual care to our cities.
Over 181 years later, we are still carrying out David’s
vision of bringing practical help and spiritual hope to
homeless and vulnerable people in Glasgow. Today we focus
our efforts in two main areas: our work with homeless people
in the City centre (The
Shieling) and our work with children and families in
Govan (Child &
Family Centre).

Our Vision, Beliefs &
Values |

Stevie leading the nightly time of prayer |
Glasgow City Mission has the clear vision
to share the love of Jesus Christ by responding to the needs
of the most vulnerable people in the city of Glasgow –
those who are homeless, addicted to substances, involved
in prostitution, victims of violence and abuse of various
kinds and children and families affected by poverty and
disadvantage. |
Glasgow City Mission’s
main purpose is to make a positive and direct impact on
vulnerable people’s lives. Our core principles relate
to the sharing of the love of Jesus Christ and delivery
of high quality care for homeless and vulnerable people
in Glasgow. These principles apply to our current work and
will serve as a guide to any future activities.
