Could you help people find a route out of rough sleeping?

Are you passionate about helping people at risk of rough sleeping during the coldest winter months?

We’re seeking staff who are motivated to tackle the problem of homelessness, with the skills to create a welcoming environment for people with complex needs.

The Glasgow Overnight Welcome Centre anticipates receiving hundreds of guests seeking refuge and a warm, safe place to sleep. At weekends, the focus moves towards supporting guests with practical needs and helping them develop a route away from rough sleeping.

About the role

Practical support that helps people move forward

Working under the direction of the Winter Project Manager, you will help deliver Glasgow City Mission's Overnight Welcome Centre as part of a small team of staff and volunteers.

You will link in with guests accessing the Welcome Centre, carry out welfare checks and engage with relevant services to help guests access accommodation.

This includes working with services such as the Glasgow City Council HSCP Out of Hours team, liaising with partner organisations and hotel staff, and providing a clear handover to the Overnight Team.

The role also involves supporting volunteers to fulfil their tasks and working patiently with guests whose circumstances may be complex.

Working pattern

Weekend support throughout the winter

Typical shifts are Saturday and Sunday, 09:00 to 14:00.

This is a fixed-term role from 1 December 2026 until 31 March 2027, with paid accrued annual leave on a pro-rata basis.

Successful candidates must also be available for training from 16–20 November 2026.

Training will cover the homelessness system, personal safety, first aid, suicide prevention and overdose prevention.

What you'll bring

Communication, patience and teamwork

You will need to be comfortable interacting positively with people from a wide variety of backgrounds, including people whose lives may currently be challenging or chaotic.

The role requires good verbal communication, the ability to diffuse challenging situations, self-motivation, computer literacy and the ability to work well within a team.

Previous experience in health, social care, community or rehabilitation work is desirable, as is knowledge of homelessness and issues relating to drug and alcohol misuse.
