Press Release: Glasgow Winter Night Shelter 2019/20

Glasgow Winter Night ShelterGlasgow City Mission confirms that we will be running the Glasgow Winter Night Shelter for the tenth consecutive year. The night shelter will again open on 1 December and run through to 31 March 2020.

The Mission is extremely grateful for the churches, individuals and trusts who financially support us and allow us to open the night shelter. We give special mention to Rangers Charity Foundation who arrange the Big Sleep Outs at Ibrox stadium and donate a significant amount towards the running of the night shelter.

Glasgow City Mission is also hugely grateful for the fantastic support we get from our agency partners without whom the night shelter would be unable to function. They include:

  • Glasgow City Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP)
  • Simon Community Scotland
  • Lodging House Mission
  • Govan Law Centre
  • Shelter Scotland
  • City Ambition Network
  • Marie Trust

The night shelter not only provides a safe and warm place for those at risk of sleeping rough, it also allows our partners to interact directly with our guests to help them improve their situations.

Last year’s night shelter saw, for the first time, HSCP staff working in the shelter five nights a week. This worked extremely well as bourne out by the statistics. Despite a 16% increase on winter 2017/18 to 691 individuals using the night shelter, this close partnership working meant that our guests were moved onto appropriate accommodation much sooner than in previous years. This was shown by 70% of guests only staying three nights or fewer and overall bed nights being 36% lower at 2,452.

HSCP’s excellent work meant that accommodation was found quicker and more frequently for the night shelter’s guests. We are delighted that HSCP will be with us at the night shelter again this year.

Glasgow City Mission and our partners are also planning with our other agency partners for extreme weather. This planning is on-going and coordinated. We stand ready to help those in difficulty and thank God for our amazing partners.

As a result of the recent cold weather we are monitoring the temperatures in case there’s a requirement for an emergency shelter in the run up to the night shelter’s official opening on 1 December. If this is necessary we will call upon previously trained staff and volunteers to staff these nights. It is essential that any night shelter, emergency or planned, is a safe place for our guests.
