Glasgow City Mission Summer Appeal 2024

Glasgow City Mission has always supported those affected by addiction. For nearly 200 years, it has been a core area of our work. Today we are blessed with a dedicated Rehab Pathways Team of David, Tim and Lee. Our Women’s Worker, Linda, is directly involved in this work as well.

These colleagues find different and unique pathways for our individual guests to travel to sobriety. Throughout our summer appeal, we will tell stories of our guests entering rehab; what happens when they are in rehab and then how we support those who have successfully completed rehab.

We hope you enjoy learning of these pathways and consider supporting our guests by involving yourself practically, prayerfully or donating financially for the benefit of these guests.

SM’s Story

David, our Rehab Pathways Manager, first met SM after he had left rehab around five years ago. He came to our City Centre Project looking to engage in some support groups to offer structure to his days. However, he soon fell away and we did not see him again for quite some time. The next time our paths crossed was in February 2023 when SM got in touch to say that he had relapsed and was looking to engage with us with a view to getting admitted to rehab again. David made a number of attempts to engage him in group work and 1-2-1 support work, all without success!

Then David received a call in early March 2024 from Jacqueline Prentice, Charge Nurse at the Crisis Outreach Service to say that SM had been in hospital after an accidental overdose, and that he was asking for David, and was still keen to get into rehab. Between David, Jaqueline and some additional support from the Simon Community Scotland’s Complex Needs Team we were able to get SM a bed in The Crisis Centre straight away.

My thinking has changed, and my lifestyle. I have begun setting new goals and feel ALIVE for the first time since being a young teenager.

David then secured SM a bed at one of our regular rehab partners, The Haven Kilmacolm, and supported him from The Crisis Centre to The Haven on 24 March where he still remains. We have monitored SM’s progress with regular updates from staff at The Haven, and have spoken to him regularly. We are delighted to report that SM has now completed the programme at The Haven and is now living in their Move On accommodation. He has started working two days a week with a local gas engineer, has joined a local church and is loving his new found life in Christ.

CG’s Story

CG has been living in Glasgow for the last two years since she moved up from England, as she wanted to make a fresh start.

She is living with a lot of trauma from her childhood and sadly found herself in cycles of addiction and homelessness ever since she arrived in the city. There have been challenges supporting her and keeping her engaged enough to look into appropriate services. This is because she has been in various hostels, rough sleeping and sofa surfing. She has also found herself in vulnerable situations, which have compromised her health, wellbeing and addiction issues.

So far, CG has dipped in and out of the support we have put in place for her. However, we have an open door policy that when she is ready, we will provide wraparound support including housing, addiction workers and other support agencies to offer the appropriate support to fit her needs.

Sadly, working with people caught up in lifestyles of trauma and addiction is not a linear process and takes time, perseverance, trust and compassion.

We pray for CG and those like her bound in addiction. We will not give up on her!
