Our HSOs, Alison and Graham, have been supporting a vulnerable young man who came through our latest Overnight Welcome Centre. Sean* had a chaotic childhood. His granny brought him up and when she died, he was handed keys to his own tenancy. Not knowing how to pay bills, budget or control his finances he ran up arrears and ended up homeless.
With our support, Sean recently attended a meeting with his caseworker to look at his circumstances and to help him devise a plan to pay back his arrears. As a result, his caseworker is now confident that the ‘intentionally homeless’ category he was placed in will be dropped and he can get his own place again.
This time he will be properly supported and shown how to manage his household expenses. Sean said to Alison, “Thank you for coming to Mansion Street with me, I couldn’t have done it without you by my side. Thank Graham as well for supporting me.”
Sean now comes to the Mission at least three times a week for food and classes and is looking forward to getting his own home with appropriate support.
