As a new member of the team at Glasgow City Mission, it was a pleasure and privilege to take part in making the 2024 Christmas Appeal. Each year, the Mission focuses on the story of a guest and their journey with us. This year, we focused on Willie’s story.

I initially met Willie on my first week at the Mission on a tour around the building, where I was able to see first-hand the wonderful groups and services running to support people impacted by isolation, poverty, addiction and homelessness. I was introduced to Willie with the same enthusiasm, respect and warmth as the staff members I was introduced to. From this moment, it was clear to see how important he is to everyone who works here.

After making this first impression, I had the chance to chat with Willie. I was amazed but not surprised to hear that he has been with the Mission for 26 years. I could tell how much the charity meant to him when he described the help he was given to find housing, connect with others and build a life for himself away from the chaos that had previously surrounded him. The Mission had provided the consistency and reliability he needed to find stability and develop safe, trusting relationships that supported him through the many challenges he has had and continues to face.

Willie’s description of the restorative power of relationships at the Mission was echoed by staff who told us about their experiences with him over the past few years. They described the importance of taking the time and care to see past Willie’s sometimes tough exterior to get to know the loyal, kind and caring individual underneath. Our team emphasised the importance of seeing him for who he really is. They felt this was critical for making him feel comfortable enough to confide in them, ask for help when he needs it, and even for continuing to come back to the Mission after each time he gets barred! He knows that the team care for him regardless, and will always be there for him.

In the same way that Willie has been impacted by the Mission, it was clear to see how heavily the Mission has been impacted by him. As Derek, our Men’s Worker described in the Christmas Appeal video; “Ultimately we’ve been family to Willie and he’s been family to us”. From his cheeky personality, to the hours of volunteering Willie has dedicated to our Men’s Group; Willie seems to have always inspired and influenced the people around him. He continues to remind them of the life-changing importance of this Mission’s work to people’s lives and our community.
